Episode 05 – Creative professionals making it while combating student debt

In Episode 05 of Business Tips for Creatives Creative – Creative professionals making it while combating student debt, we answer a listener question.

Creative professionals making it while combating student debtThe break down is really a few parts;

  1. Handling the debt itself.
  2. Getting into the industry in different ways.
  3. Do you even need to go to a creative school? (my personal favorite)

I mention briefly my view on Dave Ramsey, and how I disagree with him on one of his fundamental values… I also fully admit that his book: The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness has helped SO MANY PEOPLE! If you are struggling with debt and are serious about getting out of it… check this book out at the library or pay the $15 and have it shipped to your house in a couple days.

In part 2 of Creative professionals making it while combating student debt we hear from professionals in the industry! Subscribe to not miss it!

  • What is a common myth about freelancing?
  • When did he feel comfortable giving up his full-time job (with great benefits)?

Turns out Kevin J. Anderson understands the struggle of artist just as much! He talks about his workshop, Superstars Writing Seminars – Teaching you the Business of Being a Writer for authors focusing only on the business side!

First few business tips podcasts are in the can!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the first few Business Tips for Creatives podcasts are in the can! This morning I’ll be researching the best way to get this to you all and by late this afternoon launch:

Business Tips for Creatives Episode 1: Newbs!

I’m thinking about testing LIBSYN.comSoundcloud or PodOmatic.

Recording (and re-recording) these first episodes reminds me of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) lesson.

Eric Ries mentions that the MVP “is a version of a new product which allows a team to collect maximum amount of validating learning about customers with the least effort.”

In short GET YOUR PRODUCT OUT THERE! I failed at this miserably. Like so many artist, we want to nit-pick every detail before sharing it with the world. This is not healthy and because you are a better artist than I am, it’s robbing the rest of the world from experiencing your creativity!

One more quote and then I’m going to get to work practicing what I preach:

If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late. – Reid Hoffman, founder of LINKEDIN

So… time to be embarrassed! Sign up to get the heads up at launch!
